If you are evicted can the landlord or rental office lock the mailbox?

Thanks everyone for the advice. It was not me that got evicted it was my aunt. And the reason I posted this question is because she gets ssi and she does not want her checks to be mailed there and someone throws it away or something.

It would be illegal for you to access the mailbox, you do not live there. Yes, they can lock it, as long as the post office has a way to deliver mail they can do what they want to protect the property of the new resident.

Depends if the Landlord maintains and owns the mailbox. We own and maintain ours and I change the locks when someone moves out or is evicted…

Yes. But they can’t keep your mail or open it. They can send it back to the post office or hold it for you to pick up. But technically the mailbox itself is their property and they can change the locks on it if they want to once you no longer live there.

If you stop by the post office they will give you some change of address cards. Fill out one for each person that lived in the house that got mail.

It’s also good to do separate ones if you, or someone in the house, goes by 2 names. For instance, my brother’s first name is Michael and his middle name is Sean. He goes by Sean, but often legal mail like insurance, etc. is sent using his Michael name. If he ever moves he will need to fill out one card for each name in order to make sure all the mail gets forwarded.

Good luck to you. Sorry about the eviction.

If you have been evicted you shouldn’t have keys to it any more anyway.
